Arise & Shine – Pastor Lee Sang Yeol
from Pastor Lee Sang Yeol 2012-01-27 2630
This past February from the 21st through the 24th, there was an ASEAN visiting Korea Worship where about 5000 pastors and Christians gathered. The Hong Kong full gospel church’s opening service was lead by Pastor Jo Yong Ki, from February 28th through March 3rd, and it was successful.

Even though Hong Kong means Fragrant Harbor, it’s located in Kow loon peninsula where its culture represents dragons and snakes, restored its sovereign power, and became a special administrative region. Hong Kong is one of the few left socialist countries and runs as one country with two systems in China, maintaining its capitalistic society, economic policy, and life style. As the center of commerce, trade, and finance, Hong Kong keeps its title as the “Pearl of Asia” and “Heaven of Shopping and Tourists”. Hong Kong’s populations about 7million people and 98% of the population is Chinese. The rest is made of Philippine, British, Indians, Americans, and about twenty thousand Koreans.

However unlike the glamorous image, Hong Kong’s spiritual state is in an impoverished condition. The percentage of Christians out of the whole population is no more than 5%. During the night, the streets are filled with all kinds of nightlife, during day they are filled with myriads of shops and tourist attractions. In addition, the increasing population of Mammonism and idolatry in Hong Kong shows how the Satan is taking over Hong Kong’s society. The rapidly increasing number of drug abuse, mental disorders, separation of family, and suicide represents Hong Kong’s spiritual, mental and physical struggle that can only be relieved through God’s power.

Due to the Korean Wave that is sweeping across all Asian countries, Korean drama series Dae Jang Geum played an influential role in spreading the Korean Wave that began March 14th. This new series “Jae Joong Won” will be broadcasted in Hong Kong. We should be thankful for being Korean because of its cultural superiority, but on the other hand, this Korean Wave can cause another type of idolatry and become the object of spiritual war.

In Hong Kong, there are several spiritual gatherings such as pastors and leaders conferences with the theme “Arise & Shine.” These gatherings brought spiritual revival, restoration, recuperation, and a great work of God’s salvation. The bible says in Isaiah 61:1, “The LORD God’s spirit is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim release for captives, and liberation for prisoners.” This message tells us to stand up in the midst of the darkness and shine. The role of the light first of all, is to light up the world. In Matthew 4:16, it says that the people who lived in the dark have seen a great light, and a light has come upon those who lived in the region and in shadow of death. All the evil things happen in the dark and it the light that reveals the things hidden in the dark and make it shine. More over, light helps to rebuild the values in people because light helps to judge what is right and what is wrong. Realistically, today’s society needs light to lead us to the standard of righteousness in this dark world. According to Psalm 119:105 it says, “Your word is a lamp before my feet and a light for my journey.” Light’s other role is to give direction in life.
Light takes away all darkness, accentuates the dark, provides freedom from darkness and gives a new way of life, gives dreams and motivations, brings out a passion for life, and leads life.

Therefore, the phrase “Arise & Shine” is a command of God, Yahweh, who presides over all of creation lights up this dark world and spreads the name of Jesus Christ, who is our life and light. Also another meaning of light is that we, who received the life and light, should light up in the darkness as a believer of Jesus Christ. The bible says, in Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven”, promising that God will give grace and blessings to those who obeys his command when we shine the light. What kind of blessings will be laid upon us when we arise and shine?

① When we arise and shine, many crowds will come.

In Isaiah, 60:3-4 Bible says, ''Nations will come your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look about you: All assemble and come to you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on the arm.'' the light of Jesus Christ makes the sinners reach salvation, drive out the darkness in our minds to live a right life, directs us to our way of life and work, make our lives bright, clear, joyful, and thankful, and helps us to produce a blissful fruit of life. In the Bible, we can see that it was always crowded around Jesus. Since Jesus was the light, the wanders lost in darkness saw the light and crowded around Jesus. Also when the disciples shine by delivering gospel, the wanders, roaming around the darkness and sin, crowded around the disciples. The gospel of salvation given to us is the light and as Christians, we are the candle that shines the light, and the lighthouse. So we shine when we prove the gospel of salvation, and many crowds come by following the light.

② When we arise and shine, the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come.

Bible says in the same chapter verse 5, ''Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come.'' Here ''be radiant'' means the overflowing joy and ''your heart will throb and swell with joy'' represents the amazing feeling we get when we receive unexpected honor or means we will attain to glory that we did not expect. The reason why we shine joyous light and become amazed at heart is because the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come and overflow us with joy and make us wonder at the amazing incident. Moreover, all the fishes and treasures from the sea, all the imported property of rich sellers', delivered through the land so does to you.

Especially, the riches of the nations mean the armies of the (foreign) countries. Once the armies were against the church, but when the church shines, the strong power of armies of the foreign countries gets used for church It is because God protects and stays with authority. We can notice it in specific, verse 6-9 in the same chapter of Isaiah, ''Herds of camels will cover your land, young camels of Midian and Ephah. And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense and proclaiming the praise of the Lord(verse 6), All Kedar's flocks will be gathered to you, the rams of Nebaioth will serve you(verse 7), In the lead are the ships of Tarshish, bringing your sons and gold(verse 9).

③ When we arise and shine, God protects us safely.

Mission trips or evangelical deeds that shines are God’s commands, which are to spread and make people learn and believe in Jesus Christ, and finding those that God chose to save. However just because one is a person who is God’s shining worker, it does not mean that one does not have any problems with the enemies or have a peaceful life. Those workers actually can have more enemies and hardships to go through. Our enemy, Satan, always looks for a chance to stop the light to spread. According to the Bible, it said “don’t provide an opportunity for the devil” (Ephesians 4:27), “Be clearheaded. Keep alert. Your accuser, the devil, is on the prowl like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith. Do so in the knowledge that your fellow believers are enduring the same suffering through out the world.”(Peter5:8-9), and “Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you”(James4:7). Also in Psalms 46:1 it said, “God is our refuge and strength.” Only when God becomes our shield, refugee, and strength, we get protected and become blessed with God’s grace.

So, we need to be thankful for life under God’s protection and grace, and live to spread God’s words and his glory. When we take the things that God gave us with our mission work that shines, God surely will be with us, love us and protects us safely.

④ When we arise and shines, God make us glorious.

Shingling the light by spreading the Gospel is the way to accomplish God's will, we please Him and glorify Him. God glorifies the one who makes Him glorious and dresses him with clothes of glory.

In fact, spreading the gospel is indeed a shining work that brings God's lost souls back to Jesus. It helps them believe, love, praise, and serve the Lord. This is the how we shine, we not only glorify God, but help the ones who were lost find His light to glorify and please Him. In Isaiah 60:14-16 it tells us, ''The sons of those who afflicted you shall come bending low to you, and all who despised you shall bow down at your feet; they shall call you the City of the Lord, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel. Whereas you have been forsaken and hated, with no one passing through, I will make you majestic forever, a joy from age to age.
You shall suck the milk of nations; you shall nurse at the breast of kings; and you shall know that I, the Lord, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.''

On the other hand, God will destroy the one who despises the lighting church, makes it to be suffered, and is full of arrogance. Sometimes even God's children who are shining upon the world are despised, suffered, at all costs they will be glorified by God. Despite they are suffered but glorify God, He will get them to wear with glorious clothes.

God loves those who arise and shine for His name and glory, so He calls many to come, the riches of every nation to come, and in it all He protects, honors, and glorifies us. I bless all of you, brothers and sisters. May this message, 'arise and shine', fill you with rich blessings and overflow in all areas of your life.
